Mass Lobby of Parliament 17th October to Support

Disabled Persons (Independent Living) Bill

Dr Ian Gibson MP met a large delegation of disabled people from Norwich who came to London to take part in a mass lobby by disabled people from all over the country in support of Lord Ashley’s Independent Living Bill. The Bill, which was passed in the Lords without a single dissenting vote, would give real support to disabled people, elderly people and carers. It proposes a radical restructuring of social care provision so all these groups will have the right to live dignified and independent lives. Dr. Gibson is fully supporting this measure in the House and will work closely with the Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People on this Bill as well as making sure that disabled people in the county are given the opportunity to take advantage of the current provisions for living independently, such as direct payments and, when they come fully on stream, individual budgets.

Dr Gibson said

“I am is aware that despite promises to make it easier for disabled people to live independently in the community, this has not happened and disabled people in Norfolk are finding it harder and harder to manage.  I will be consulting with constituents on this and a number of other issues of concern for disabled people including transport, housing and redevelopment plans in the city, particularly those now being prepared for Anglia Square.”
