Mathematics in Parliament Article

Every year Ian takes part in the Royal Society MP/Scientist Pairing Scheme. This year Ian was paired with Mathematician Dr Mirna Dzamonja, from the University of East Anglia. Mirna spent a week shadowing Ian in Westminster learning all about how Parliament works. Ian and Mirna had some great debates about the importance of mathematics and the lack of mathematics in Parliament.

Ian gave the opening address to this nanotechnology conference.
Ian is Chair of the University of Surrey's Nanotechnology Taskforce which aims to bring academia industry and government together to introduce a coordinated approach to investement in and the funding of nanotechnology research.
Ian argued that nanotechnology like the ipod nano is small smart and sexy, and offers the potential for a new industrial revolution. However there is potential for a backlash from consumer groups such as Which? if the new research is not regulated and if the public are not involved throughout this new development.

Britain Against Cancer is the All Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer's annual conference. It is attended by patients, charities, health professionals and policy-makers and provides a forum to look at the impact of public policy on cancer services and research.

Ian had actually stood down and was not expecting to have the opportunity to ask a question, however when the speaker came to him he quickly asked about the Nuclear Veterans project he is currently working on. Ian took part in a four way panel discussion called "Getting our Priorities Right" He discussed the responsibilities of opinion formers and the industry in making healthcare decisions with Dr Richard Barker, Jenni Murray and Yogi Amin. Ian also gave a short speech on "How MPs are involved in the aftermath of NICE decisions and the challenges this presents regarding a balanced approach to the rights of the citizen"

Ian recently spoke at the CSO Cenference. The aim of the CSO's conference is "to deliver a high quality scientifically based conference, with recognised leaders from Government, the general scientific community and Healthcare Science".
Ian spoke in the "Raising the profile of Science" section which focused on "The importance of healthcare science to the delivery of NHS reforms, why we need to raise the profile of science in society and demonstrating how healthcare scientists are contributing to important public health issues"

Practical Management of Thoracic Cancers

This conference had the following objectives:
1. Understand the current and future direction of the NHS
2. Review standard of care in mesothelioma and current standards in NSCLC.
3. Discuss integration of new agents, novel therapeutic approaches, and ongoing scientific research to improve the care of patients with thoracic tumors.
Ian gave a political perspective on the topic of "How will we access the latest Treatments fo Cancer?". He then joined a panel discussion which included a clinicians perspective and a patients persepctive on the same topic. You can view his presentation here

Festival of science The School of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences at Surrey University held its annual Festival of Research on Friday 1st July, 2005.Dr. Tim Hunt 2001 Nobel Laureate Dr. Richard Lane, Director of Science at the Natural History Museum, and I attended the Festival.
