Trident day of Protest

The day began at 9.30am with a breakfast time press conference organised by Jon Trickett MP and attended by a delegation of cross-party MPs and campaigners.
After interviews and speeches the Groups attended a photocall outside the Houses of Parliament where they tore apart a cheque for £76 billion. This figure is the estimated cost of Trident to the British Taxpayer.
There was a mass lobby of Parliament all day and many hundreds of people from across the country came to Parliament to speak to their MPs and about the issue.

At 6pm the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament held a rally in Parliament Square. Dr Gibson gave a speech opposing the government motion. To see a selection of speeches from the rally click here
The day culminated in the vote at 7pm and the motion was passed. However, four Junior Minsiters resigned in the lead up to the Trident vote and 95 MPs voted against the government, making it the largest Labour rebellion since the vote on the war in Iraq.
